It is that time of year again at Devolutions when we look back and recap some of the key announcements, milestones, learning, and insights from 2025, along with some fun stuff! Like all good traditions, our annual year in review is something we truly look forward to, and we hope you feel the same way.

To get into the right mood, we invite you to relax, pour your favorite beverage, grab a snack, and play some suitable background music (how about a little Christmas with Bach?).

Here in Part 1, we focus on January to June. Thursday in Part 2, we will continue the recap with a look at July to December.

January

We kicked off 2025 by exploring Gartner’s top 10 strategic technology trends for the year, which suggested where AI, quantum, and human machine collaboration might take us next.

Next, we raised the alarm about a new Codefinger ransomware campaign that abused compromised AWS keys.

We also continued another favorite tradition with the Devolutions’ 2025 Roadmap, in which our CEO and Founder David Hervieux shared the major features and improvements that we had planned across our product lineup for the year. Once again, we’re thrilled to note that we achieved every milestone on the Roadmap (and a few ahead of time!). David is at work on the 2026 Roadmap, which he will share in a few weeks – stay tuned!

To close out the month, we looked at Remote Desktop Manager’s evolution in Modernizing the codebase of RDM: A journey from 2008 to 2024. It’s hard to believe that what once started out as a tool that David created for his own use as an IT consultant, has now grown into a powerful solution that is trusted by more than 800,000 IT pros worldwide!

And for laughs, January’s Sysadminotaur comic #150 Click Magnet perfectly captured the eternal struggle between curiosity, clickbait, and common sense in IT life.

February

In February, we shined a spotlight on 9 types of sensitive information that organizations should store in Devolutions Hub Business, and explained how the solution goes far beyond basic password management.

We also added a new course in Devolutions Academy called Understanding Vaults, which helps Remote Desktop Manager users understand how to use vaults to improve organization, security, and day-to-day efficiency.

On the security front, our Cybersecurity Newsflash looked at vulnerabilities discovered in the DeepSeek iOS app, and we shared practical advice for users and IT teams responsible for mobile security.

We also published Remote Desktop Manager FAQ: Overview edition, which provided answers to some of the most common questions our support team receives about the solution.

And for fun, February’s Sysadminotaur comic #151 Stack underflow revealed some unfortunate truths about some user forums (we are saying “some” because the Devolutions Forum is a very supportive and respectful place, as many of you know!).

March

In March, we published what became our most viewed article of 2025: Using RDP without leaving traces — the MSTSC public mode. The article explained how MSTSC’s public mode affects security, privacy, and forensic analysis.

We also invited the community to explore the latest 2025.1 releases across Remote Desktop Manager, Devolutions Server, Devolutions PAM, Devolutions Hub, Devolutions Gateway, and Devolutions Workspace.

Our Cybersecurity Newsflash covered the active exploitation of serious zero-day vulnerabilities in multiple VMware products, and shared guidance for affected organizations.

We then turned the spotlight on the new AI Assistant in Remote Desktop Manager, which helps IT pros work faster and smarter, while keeping them in full control.

Rounding out the month, we released a new white paper: 7 quick wins for SMB cybersecurity in 2025. The discussion focused on practical steps that organizations can take to strengthen their defenses, yet without adding complexity or breaking their budgets.

March is when even those of us who love winter around here say “enough is enough!” Thankfully, Patrick made us forget the cold (at least for a little while) with the hilarious Sysadminotaur #152 Password managers, according to…. As the title suggests, it poked fun at some of the myths and misunderstandings that surround password managers.

April

In April, we put the spotlight on the Bitwarden synchronizer in Remote Desktop Manager, which enables IT teams to sync Bitwarden credentials into RDM to streamline access and strengthen security.

We also had some fun with Top hobbies for geeks: looking back and ahead, which revisited a classic 2017 article and updated it with new and evolving geeky pastimes.

Security was front and center in Top 10 most common corporate passwords of 2024 and why they’re a major security risk, which reminded everyone why using weak and reused passwords is asking for serious trouble.

Next, we published Devolutions PAM FAQ: Overview edition, which covered some of the most common questions and answers about our popular PAM solution for SMBs.

Rounding out the month, the article Decoding passkeys: The key to a passwordless world explored how passkeys work, and why they are an important step toward phishing-resistant authentication.

Patrick also created another instant classic with Sysadminotaur #153 Commented reality, which imagined what life would be like if IT pros could add code-style comments to everyday life.

May

As the weather finally started to cooperate and the snow gave way to sunshine, we celebrated May the 4th with 6 cybersecurity lessons we can learn from Star Wars, connecting famous scenes from the saga to practical security best practices.

We kept the Star Wars theme going in Revenge of the 5th: 5 big cybersecurity mistakes SMBs make, using this installment in the franchise to highlight common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

We also turned the spotlight on RDM CyberArk PVWA credential entry for PSM connection, showing how Remote Desktop Manager streamlines secure session launches.

Security and compliance stayed in focus as we announced the renewal of our SOC 2 Type II report for Devolutions Hub Business and Devolutions Hub Personal, reaffirming our long-term commitment to strong controls and transparency.

Rounding out the month, we looked at Streamlined SSH key management with Devolutions PAM, which focused on built-in SSH key rotation to simplify secure access and support compliance efforts.

On the fun side, Board games at Devolutions: 2025 edition shared some of our team’s favorite selections. We also loved Sysadminotaur #154 Port authority, which explores what could go wrong when mystery USB devices meet company computers.

June

In June, we introduced the Starter Pack: a right-sized privileged access management bundle designed to help smaller IT teams secure privileged accounts quickly and affordably. The reception across the community was even more enthusiastic than we had hoped, and this was the 4th most viewed blog post of the year!

We also released The Devolutions State of IT Security in SMBs in 2024–25 Survey Report, which revealed that while confidence is high among SMBs, important gaps remain in areas such as privileged access, password practices, and remote access security.

Next, we turned the spotlight on the CyberArk dashboard in RDM, giving users a centralized way to view and work with their CyberArk data directly inside RDM.

We also rolled out the 2025.2 wave of product updates across Remote Desktop Manager, Devolutions Server, Devolutions Hub Business, and Devolutions Workspace. We highlighted several new features, refinements, and integrations across the Devolutions ecosystem.

To wrap things up, we featured an interview with Devolutions Power User and long-time community member Thomas Higgins, who shared how he leverages our tools in his environment and offered practical tips for fellow IT pros.

And for laughs, June’s Sysadminotaur #155 Office quest followed the team on an epic trek through the everyday hazards of office life.

Stay Tuned!

The first half of 2025 here on Planet Devolutions was full of product announcements, company milestones, security news and insights, tutorials and spotlights, and of course: plenty of geeky fun. But we’re just getting started!

In Part 2 of our 2025 Year in Review, we’ll look at some key highlights from July to December. Stay tuned!
